Each year, Americans celebrate the Fourth of July with traditions such as barbecues, yard games, concerts, parades, and fireworks displays.

The Declaration of Independence was formally adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, although it was signed by most signatories in August.

Notably, three presidents, namely Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe, died on July 4.

John Adams believed that American independence should be celebrated on July 2, as that was the actual day the Continental Congress voted for independence in 1776.

In 1781, Massachusetts became the first state to make the 4th of July an official state holiday.
