Four years after initial rumors, TikTok is set to challenge Apple Music and Spotify with the launch of TikTok Music, according to 9to5Mac. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, aims to disrupt the audio streaming market.
TikTok Music’s entry into the market poses a threat to Apple and Spotify, considering its massive user base of 1.67 billion, with 1.06 billion monthly active users. If even a fraction of these users subscribe to TikTok Music, it could spell trouble for the established players.
Currently, TikTok Music is exclusively available in Brazil and Indonesia, limiting its reach to approximately half a billion people. The service’s release in the US remains uncertain, especially given the strained US-China relations.
Features and Appeal
TikTok Music differentiates itself by offering unique features to attract users. Subscribers can sync their existing TikTok accounts with TikTok Music. The catalog includes popular hits from major record labels such as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music.
Additionally, TikTok Music allows users to download tracks for offline listening, provides personalized music recommendations, and offers real-time lyrics. Users can also access full versions of viral TikTok songs, create collaborative playlists, import their music libraries, and search for songs using lyrics. The platform promotes social interaction among music lovers by enabling comments and discussions on catalog tracks.
Pricing and Membership
TikTok Music does not offer a free membership option, but users can avail a one-month free trial. In Brazil, the subscription fee is $3.49 per month, similar to Apple Music’s pricing. Pricing in different markets varies, with Apple Music costing $10.99/month in the US. In Indonesia, the pricing model is complex, ranging from $2.96 to $3.25 per month depending on the platform and duration of use.
Despite the arrival of TikTok Music, Apple Music and Spotify remain vigilant. Spotify has even introduced a TikTok-like video feed feature since 2021, which was rolled out in March 2023.
