Bluesky, a decentralized social network similar to Twitter, has decided to pause new sign-ups temporarily in order to address performance issues. The problems arose after Twitter implemented limits on the number of tweets users can view per day. Although Bluesky still requires an invite code for registration, the influx of new users has caused difficulties.
In a recent post, Bluesky stated, “We will temporarily be pausing Bluesky sign-ups while our team continues to resolve the existing performance issues. We’ll keep you updated when invite codes will resume functionality. We’re excited to welcome more users to our beta soon!”
Currently, Bluesky’s status page reports “degraded performance,” with the first notice of issues at 1:47 PM ET. While posts can still be loaded on the web, they often take a significant amount of time. The iOS app appears to have a smoother experience, though.
At 2:03 PM ET, Bluesky announced that it is facing “record-high traffic” and is actively working on mobile app updates to address the situation, as mentioned by Bluesky engineer Paul Frazee.
The troubles on Twitter started when the platform began blocking unregistered users, which Elon Musk, the owner, referred to as a “temporary emergency measure” due to excessive data exploitation. To further address the issue, new limits were introduced for the number of tweets users can view in a day.
In addition, Mastodon, another social media platform, has also experienced a surge in new users. According to a tracker, over 26,000 new accounts were created within the last day.
Overall, Bluesky’s decision to temporarily halt sign-ups is a response to the performance issues caused by increased traffic from Twitter. The team is actively working on resolving these problems to ensure a smoother experience for all users.
