Himachal Pradesh Congress leader, Vikramaditya Singh, has expressed support for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), going against his own party’s stance. Several Congress leaders have criticized the move as “propaganda” ahead of the upcoming state Assembly election and the 2024 General election.
Singh, the son of late Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh, emphasized that the Congress party has always represented the diverse fabric of India. Regarding the UCC, he stated that a strong consensus must be built among all concerned parties before implementing any law. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that no section of society feels marginalized by the legislation and called for the voices of minorities and those who may be affected to be heard.
Singh’s statement supporting the UCC was welcomed by former Himachal Pradesh chief minister and BJP leader, Jairam Thakur. Thakur expressed the belief that the UCC would be in the best interest of the nation and society. However, Singh criticized the BJP, accusing them of bringing up such topics before elections to divert attention from pressing issues. He highlighted the ongoing crisis in Manipur and criticized the BJP for not taking action against the chief minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also advocated for the implementation of the UCC, making a strong pitch for it during a recent address to BJP workers in Bhopal. The 22nd Law Commission of India has sought the views of religious organizations and the public on the issue of the UCC. The Commission aims to replace personal laws based on religions, customs, and traditions with a common law applicable to all citizens, regardless of religion, caste, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.
Congress has reiterated its stance that the UCC is undesirable at this stage and has stated that it will provide further comments if a draft bill or a report on the issue is presented.
