The Z-Morh tunnel, a geo-strategically important project, is set to provide seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Kargil, and will considerably reduce the travel time between Srinagar and Leh. The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inspected the progress of this project on Monday, April 10.

Strategic Importance of Z-Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh tunnel is being built under the Thajiwas mountain glacier, between Gagangir and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district of Kashmir. Its construction will ensure that the Sonamarg tourist town is accessible throughout the year, boosting tourism and socio-economic development in the entire region.

The construction of 19 tunnels in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Z-Morh tunnel, at a cost of Rs 25,000 crore, is a game changer for the region’s connectivity. The two-lane road tunnel will also provide all-weather connectivity to Srinagar and Kargil, facilitating faster movement of people and goods.

Technical Specifications of Z-Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh tunnel project comprises a main tunnel of a total length of 10.8 m, a modified horse shoe shape escape tunnel of a total length of 7.5 m, a D-shaped ventilation tunnel of a total length of 8.3 m, two major culverts of 110 m and 270 m in length, and one small culvert of 30 m in length. Till now, 75% of the work has been completed, and the project is expected to be dedicated by December 2023.

The Z-Morh tunnel is equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System and a dedicated escape tunnel, making it easier to control traffic and facilitate movement. The debris generated during the construction work has been utilized for way-side facilities and development of the area.

Conclusion

The Z-Morh tunnel project will provide an impetus to the region’s social and economic development, opening up new avenues for tourism and business. It will be a milestone in the region’s connectivity and ensure that the benefits of development reach every corner of the region. The project is a testament to the government’s commitment to creating infrastructure that will drive growth and development in the country.
