Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair on July 18. The inauguration will take place via video conferencing.
Enhancing Connectivity Infrastructure
Under the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity infrastructure, the new terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport has been constructed at a cost of Rs 710 crore. The airport aims to play a crucial role in boosting the connectivity of the island Union Territory.
Key Features of the New Terminal Building
The newly built Integrated Terminal Building spans approximately 40,800 sqm. It has the capacity to handle about 50 lakh passengers annually. Furthermore, an Apron suitable for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft has been constructed at a cost of Rs 80 crore, allowing for the parking of ten aircraft at a time.
Architectural Design and Sustainability Features
The architectural design of the airport terminal is inspired by nature, resembling a shell-shaped structure representing the sea and islands. The terminal incorporates various sustainability features, including a Double Insulated Roofing System to reduce heat gain, skylights for maximum natural sunlight, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing.
Moreover, the terminal building incorporates rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, an on-site sewage treatment plant that reuses 100% of treated wastewater for landscaping, and a 500 KW capacity solar power plant. These features ensure minimal negative impact on the islands’ environment.
Boosting Tourism and Economy
Port Blair, known as the gateway to the pristine islands of the Andaman and Nicobar, is a popular tourist destination. The spacious New Integrated Terminal Building is expected to increase air traffic and enhance tourism in the region. It will also generate employment opportunities for the local community and contribute to the economic growth of the area.
