Indian Railways on high alert after receiving an anonymous letter threatening to replicate a “Balasore-like train tragedy” in Telangana during the first week of July. The letter, addressed to the Divisional Railway Manager of Secunderabad division, has prompted a red alert across all railway zones.
The letter, received on June 30, 2023, warns of a potential train tragedy on the Hyderabad-Delhi-Hyderabad route similar to the devastating Balasore train accident that occurred on June 2, 2023, claiming nearly 300 lives and injuring around 1,000 individuals in the South Eastern Zone.
In response to the threat, Indian Railways has taken immediate action, urging all divisions to remain vigilant. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) units have been put on high alert following the receipt of the anonymous letter. The state government has also been notified of the situation.
Although the credibility of the threat remains uncertain, Indian Railways is not taking any chances and has issued instructions to all zones to stay fully alert.
Considering the possibility of external interference in the signaling system during the Balasore train accident, the Railways has referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to identify the responsible party.
While the initial report submitted by the Commissioner Railway Safety (CRS) on June 29 has indicated human error as a contributing factor, the CBI is yet to conclude its investigation. The CBI’s report will specifically focus on any potential sabotage angles related to the tragedy.
In summary, Indian Railways has received an anonymous letter threatening a repetition of the “Balasore-like train tragedy” in Telangana. The Railways and relevant authorities are taking the threat seriously, with heightened security measures in place and the involvement of the CBI to investigate any potential sabotage.
