Air India, a Tata Group-owned airline, has recently signed purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing to acquire a total of 470 aircraft. This move marks a significant step forward in Air India’s $70-billion fleet expansion program, which was announced earlier this year. The purchase agreements were finalized during the ongoing Paris Air Show.

The order placed by Air India includes a variety of aircraft models. From Airbus, they will acquire 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900, along with 140 Airbus A320neo and 70 Airbus A321neo narrowbody aircraft. From Boeing, they will add 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft, and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft to their fleet.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, expressed his optimism about this development, stating that it positions Air India for long-term growth and success. He believes that this investment will showcase the best of modern aviation to the world.

Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, shared his enthusiasm for the fleet renewal and expansion program. He emphasized that within five years, Air India will operate the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across their route network, contributing to a more confident global presence for India.

To support Air India in this ambitious endeavor, Satair, an Airbus company, and Boeing Global Services will provide a range of solutions including parts and maintenance provisioning, digital applications, and modification services.

The delivery of the new aircraft will commence later this year, with the Airbus A350 leading the way. The majority of the order will be received starting from mid-2025 onwards. In the meantime, Air India has already started receiving leased B777 and A320 aircraft to expedite their fleet and network expansion.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus, expressed his excitement about being a key partner in Air India’s reinvention. He believes that the efficiency, comfort, and range capabilities offered by Airbus’ latest generation aircraft will contribute to Air India’s transformation into a world-class premium carrier.

Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted the fuel efficiency of their aircraft models, including the 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner, and 777X. He stated that these planes will power Air India’s future fleet sustainably, particularly in the rapidly growing commercial aviation market.
