Bungie, the developer behind Destiny 2, has announced a significant change in the cast of characters. Following the unfortunate passing of actor Lance Reddick earlier this year, Keith David, known for his roles in acclaimed films such as The Thing, They Live, and Nope, will step into the role of Commander Zavala as the English-language voice.
A New Beginning with Keith David
The transition to Keith David’s portrayal of Zavala will commence with the release of Destiny 2’s highly anticipated expansion, The Final Shape, scheduled to launch in 2024. Bungie has assured that Lance Reddick’s existing lines will remain intact for this upcoming release, preserving his contribution to the game.
“I am honored to continue the great work of Lance Reddick as Zavala,” expressed David in a statement on Bungie’s official blog. He further added, “Lance captured the character’s sense of integrity so wonderfully. It is my intention to continue that work.”
A Familiar Voice in the Gaming World
Keith David’s collaboration with Bungie is not new. His voice talents were previously utilized during the Halo series, where he brought The Arbiter to life. Over the span of his four-decade acting career, David has lent his voice to various video game franchises, including Mass Effect, Saints Row, and Call of Duty.
Bungie is enthusiastic about David’s contribution to the role of Commander Zavala. In their statement, they emphasized their respect for the character’s history and their excitement for the journey that lies ahead.
A Fond Farewell to Lance Reddick
The gaming community mourned the loss of Lance Reddick in March. Known for his notable roles in HBO’s The Wire, the John Wick films, and Bungie’s Destiny games, Reddick was a pivotal figure in the gaming world. As Zavala, he served as the Titan Vanguard and had been an integral part of Destiny players’ experiences for almost a decade.
Zavala holds a crucial role in the Destiny narrative and remains a constant presence in the Tower, where players gather.
